After that, Ben's memory fell off and there was little else of value on the tape. Ryne was out checking his story. Could he have seen the shooting from his window? Or would it have been impossible? Was there anyone else nearby who had seen anything that night, anyone who wished to help Old Ben out of a murder charge?

Shannon had her hands full with reports coming in from the field via Yoshikane's team, Max Robeson, and Harry Gibbs. Despite the leads each were following up, despite hunches and educated guesswork, despite the loss of sole leather, they seemed stymied. She had seen to it that the artist sketch from Avery Fuller was duplicated and that each of the team had a copy. Everyone was doing his and her best, but results were simply not coming in. The investigation was at a crucial point, a point that Ryne would call the pivotal point. If the killer should decide he could he live without ever committing the act again, he'd likely go scott-free at this point. He could go to another large metropolis and begin anew, kill several more, and from there go on to another city.
